Dueñas was elected president in 1852 and served until 1854.
Dueñas resigned as provisional president on 30 January 1852 and was briefly succeeded by Colonel José María San Martín for two days.

On 27 January 1855, Dueñas was elected as the president of the Senate of El Salvador.
Dueñas left the vice presidency on 1 February 1858 when his term expired.
