  1. What power rested on

    • Map
    • Rulers and reigns
    • Data and accuracy

States since 1789 show what their rulers’ power rested on, and lines of rulers stop counting prime ministers as monarchs.

    • From V-Dem, for states from 1789: what the chief executive’s power rested on (heredity, the military, a ruling party, elections, the legislature), each on its own track, because the five do not add up to a whole. Coup attempts are listed by year.
    • Fixed: prime ministers were counted as rulers, so Russia showed a one-year median reign. The line of rulers now follows the head of state, and says which office it is a line of.
    • A median reign is shown only where at least 50 years of the line is dated; otherwise the panel says how much is dated.
    • Disasters now say what kind they were: earthquake, flood, eruption, storm, landslide, impact or tsunami.
    • The economy line follows your pointer, and the state’s own wars, plagues, famines, revolts and regime changes are marked on the same axis.
    • Fixed: the year box on the map overlapped the speed buttons beside it.
