Borders, flags and trade routes
- Map
- Cities and places
The map gains historical borders for every year, the flags that actually flew, and the trade routes that crossed them.
- Historical borders from Cliopatria redraw with the year, each state in its own colour with its English name. Borders are never interpolated: the map shows the recorded border and says which years it holds for.
- Each state flies the flag it flew in those years: Hungary in 1400 flies Sigismund’s banner, not the Habsburg black and yellow.
- Clicking a state opens a card beside the map, and its article where the atlas holds that state in that year: France in 1682 opens the Kingdom of France.
- Markers show what they are, with an icon for each kind, and people appear with their portraits.
- Forty-five trade corridors, from the Incense Route and the Silk Road to the Manila galleon, each an entry of its own: what it carried, how much where a source counted it, and how it changed. Beside them, 3,165 Greek and Roman road segments from the Barrington Atlas.
- A chronicle beside the map lists what began and ended around the year you are on.
- Press play: the map moves through the years at 1, 10, 40 or 200 years a second.
- Fixed: Baghdad carried American flags and Doha a British one; each state now has a single label at its largest part.
- Fixed: the map could get stuck on an error screen after a minor tile error; it no longer does, and it has a “Try again” button.
